What is Pilates? (pronounced puh-LAH-teez)

The Pilates method of body conditioning is a unique, proven system of exercises developed over 90 years ago by the late Joseph H. Pilates. Pilates is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility and strength for the whole body without building bulk. Pilates exercises include twisting, stretching, pushing, pulling and rolling movements both on the floor and standing.

What makes Pilates different is the emphasis on Core Stabilization, that is, the ability to use your Power Center (your upper back and shoulder muscles, abdominals, pelvic floor muscles and lower back) to power you though life's daily movement. If you have a strong, stable central foundation, then the movements of the arms and legs will be much more effective and efficient.

Pilates is suitable for persons of all ages, fitness levels and injury history. Performance in all activities, whether sports, fitness or life related, are enhanced. Other benefits of Pilates include minimized injury risk and even rehabilitation of those recovering from injury. Pilates will improve muscular strength, endurance and flexibility, improve posture and alignment, reduce stress and fatigue, improve balance between anterior and posterior musculature, reduce the risk of back pain and/or injury by increasing strength and flexibility of the lower back and enhances quality of movement and physical grace.
